Two Truths and One Wish: A Low-Prep Icebreaker

Two Truths and One Wish” is a fresh twist on a classic icebreaker activity that helps language teachers connect with their students on a deeper level. This activity is easy to implement and requires no preparation. Simply hand out index cards and ask students to write three statements: two truths and one wish. You can provide sentence frames to support their writing in the target language. If students struggle, allow them to write in their first language (L1), and then you can translate their sentences into the target language.

Once you’ve collected the cards, read the statements aloud to the class in the target language. The fun begins as students try to guess which statements are factual and which is the wish! Ask the students more personalized questions about their one wish. This activity sparks engaging discussions and opens the door to Personalized Questions and Answers (PQA), allowing you to explore your students’ hopes and dreams while building a sense of community in the classroom
